Many students do not start participating in the discussions till two hours before the deadline, which ends up being unfair on the rest of the students who do not have any classmates' posts to respond to in a timely manner. The ability to either penalize those who post too close to the deadline, or set a primary deadline for the original post 72 hours before the final deadline will prevent this from happening and force straggling students to make posts in time.
